Home is at the bottom of a Frothy beer!
Every bandit needs a hide out. Robin Hood and his Merry Men had Sherwood Forest, The Fratellis had their abandoned restaurant, and even Han and Chewie could seek refuge in the Falcon. When you're on the run, having a safe house where you can lay low is a necessity. There are some rules, however, that should be followed when choosing one. First, it has to be inconspicuous, yet instantly recognizable. It has to be comfortable, so you can relax when you get a moment to. It's gotta be run by trustworthy folks, for obvious reasons, and finally, it better be stocked with some damn fine alcohol! For the Partners in Dine, there's only one place that meets the criteria... West Ashley's very own Frothy Beard Brewing Company!
Earlier last month we helped celebrate Frothy's 5th year anniversary as a bonafide brewery. Callie and I had a chance to spend some time with the gentlemen responsible for building this monumental safe-haven. Over a few (many) delicious beers and mouthwatering pizza, we came to understand why Frothy has quickly become our favorite brewery in town.
To the untrained eye, Frothy Beard might not look like much from the outside. Nestled in a West Ashley strip mall, Frothy neighbors some less than dazzling store fronts. Ask any beer enthusiast in town however, and they’ll immediately point you to the iconic image of Finnegan! Frothy’s champion of lore has his face boldly displayed on the exterior of their building, welcoming all weary travelers (2 or 4 legged), bar room heroes, and greasy pizza fanatics alike.
The interior of Frothy Beard looks like the nerd cave you wish you had! The walls are lined with the most excellent collectibles from pop culture, including a Hyrulian Shield, flags from every GoT House and a suspended space battle featuring X-Wings and Tie Fighters in a perpetual dogfight. If conversation with your mates gets stale, rent an NES or SNES game from the bar, pull up a stool and fight for the high score. If video games aren’t your style, you’ll find a selection of board games available inside as well as corn hole, giant Jenga and Connect Four outside. If you’re lucky, like we were on Frothy’s anniversary, you might even get a chance to play some Combat Archery in the parking lot! Add to that yoga and painting sessions, and a “Frothy Fit Club” that encourages exercise before guzzling beer and pizza. With a seemingly endless string of events filling their calendar, there's always something to do at Frothy, and everyone’s invited.
That brings us to the staff, and the guys that started this glorious testament to beerkind. Knowledgeable, easy going and occasionally willing to help you with that one trivia question that’s got you stumped; these bartenders have the class to fill your glass. It’s no surprise when they’re led by three upright and badass co-founders, who share their passion for beer, pizza, geekdom and having a good time. Just the kind of folks you want watching your back while you empty your cup.
Of course the aforementioned perks help to make Frothy our favorite, but that’s not to undercut the beer selection or pure genius involved in each unique concoction these fellas brew up. No matter your preference, there is something delicious available for you to sip, quaff or chew on. We partners had the privilege of helping to taste test a recent batch of “Oo-de-lally” a ginger and lemongrass Saison. Locally sourced, fresh ingredients (and of course Charleston water) make Oo-de-lally stand out. Pair that with a “Monster Slice” of Zombie Bob’s pie and you can rest easy, knowing that you've had a taste of the finer things in life. Zombie Bob’s and Frothy share more than just a space by the way, they also make their sourdough crust with some help from Frothy’s “Back from the Dead” Porter… it's as delicious as it is clever.
It should be obvious that we're super fans of this wonderful spot in our neighborhood. So when you're looking for something to do, a place to hang or just a cold beer to wash down some za… trust us when we tell you to look no further, and say hello when you see us there.
Come hideout with us, the PID's favorite brewery
